DOMINIC + MOHAN

Hello from New York City!
We are a happily married couple in New York City. Soon after we met seven years ago, we knew we wanted to be dads together. We’re so excited to grow our family through adoption.
We can’t imagine how challenging it must be to choose a family to take care of your baby. We admire your courageous decision to choose adoption and are so grateful to be considered by you.
ADOPTION IS IMPORTANT TO US BECAUSE AS A SAME-SEX COUPLE, WE NEVER THOUGHT WE WOULD BE ABLE TO START A FAMILY.
As a mixed-race couple, we know what it’s like to have multiple cultures under one roof.
We are so grateful for the opportunity to grow our family through adoption and look forward to celebrating your child’s unique cultural background.

Thank you
FOR CONSIDERING US TO BE YOUR BABY’S ADOPTIVE FAMILY!

OUR LIFE TOGETHER

HIKING IN OUR BACKYARD UPSTATE
Our first date represents us well: Sometimes things don’t go as planned, but together, we’ve always been able to make it work, make each other laugh, and find something beautiful in the end.
Here’s what happened— On our first date, the sole of Dominic’s shoe came undone as we were walking to the movies. Cracking up the entire time, we quickly ran (Dom sort of hopped) into the nearest store to find a way to fix the shoe. Super glue did the trick, but we ended up missing the movie. We decided to walk across town to a different theater and ended up watching a different movie, “Only Lovers Left Alive”, a beautiful and funny movie about two vampires who have been in love for centuries. We definitely made the best of the evening and realized we found something special in each other. Since that first date, we’ve built a life filled with love and support, laughing and discovering new things along the way.
Our very different careers and unique skills complement each other. Whereas Mohan (an attorney) is highly organized and analytical, Dominic (an artist) can come up with creative ways to address issues.

WE LAUGH TOGETHER…A LOT!

COFFEE BREAK IN NYC WITH OUR DOG OOMA
Food and cooking are central to our lives. Gathering around the dinner table with our friends and family is one of our favorite things to do. Mohan enjoys making Chinese dumplings, noodles and stir fries, Indian biriyani, Sri Lankan curries, Korean stews and Thai salads. Dominic likes to cook homemade pastas and braising sauces with veggies and herbs from our garden. It will be fun to do cooking projects with our child and teach them how to roll fresh pasta, fold dumplings and the joy of sharing homemade food with your loved ones.
It is important to us that our child is exposed to diverse cultures. Travel has always been a passion of ours, and we plan to travel to new countries every year with our child. So far, we’ve traveled around Sri Lanka with our mothers, road tripped around Morocco, hunted for the best tacos in Mexico City, and visited art museums in London and Paris. We can’t wait to fill up our child’s passport!
We both love art and many of our friends work in creative fields. We love going to gallery openings, spending a day at a museum, and going to the ballet. Our child will grow up in a home filled with art, music and books.

HARVESTING CUCUMBERS

MAKING SRI LANKAN INDIAPPA

THE MAPLE SYRUP HARVEST
BY MOHAN: DOMINIC IS THE BEST PERSON I KNOW. HE IS FUNNY, CREATIVE, AND CARING.
Dom makes breakfast for me every day, and by the time we sit down to eat, he will have made me laugh at least once. He is an artist, and I couldn’t imagine any other career for him. Dom is always learning, thinking, and creating. He is very good with his hands and can pick up skills easily. He built shelves and cabinets for our bathroom and kitchen, put up dry wall, and most impressively, he quickly mastered the art of making a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast, indiappa, which my mom taught him how to make. He loves reading stories out loud and I can’t wait to see him read to our child, which I know he is so excited to do. I also can’t wait to see the creative projects he will do with our child and know he will give him or her more than I can even imagine. Dom also loves and gives time to his family, friends, and community, He has an inherent sense of service for others. Like I said, he is the best person I know.

FUN AT AN ART EXHIBIT
I am an attorney at a law firm in New York City. I listen to, advise and advocate for my clients in and out of the courtroom. I also devote a significant amount of time to pro bono (free) legal services, including representing two immigration organizations in a lawsuit against the U.S. Government to stop policies that made it harder for people to apply for asylum in the U.S. Before law school, I completed a master’s degree and worked at an international human rights organization.

HOLDING ONE OF OUR GOD DAUGHTERS

CELEBRATING A BIRTHDAY!

MOHAN’S HOMEMADE BIRIYANI
BY DOMINIC: MOHAN IS SMART, COMMITTED, AND PASSIONATE.
When we first met, Mohan was studying to go to law school. On one of our first dates, I took him to my favorite New York City beach, and he brought his law books. We spent the afternoon swimming, doing handstands, and working on logic puzzles together. It was a mixture of fun and learning that I came to know is 100% Mohan.
He is fiercely loyal and family-oriented, traits he learned from his mom and dad. Mohan and I share a desire to nurture and are eager to put that energy toward a family of our own. After 7 years together, two of them married, we’ve worked hard to get prepared to become fathers. I’ve witnessed and benefited from his intelligence and calm wisdom and know Mohan is ready to be a father.

WE LIVE IN THE EAST VILLAGE,
NEW YORK CITY
We always knew that we wanted to expand our family, so last year we expanded our home by purchasing the apartment next door and renovating it to combine it with our old apartment. Our new apartment has two bedrooms, including one for our baby to grow into. We love living in the East Village neighborhood because of its many parks and trees (which can be rare in New York City!), it’s diverse community and culture, and the many amazing restaurants with food from all over the world.

WE LOVE BEING NEW YORKERS

FAMILY DOG PILE
AS MUCH AS WE LOVE NYC, WE ALSO ENJOY GETTING OUT INTO NATURE.
We go to our farmhouse in upstate New York most weekends and often host our family and friends for holidays. Our 40 acres includes flower gardens, lots of lawn for playing games, forests to hike and explore, an old apple orchard, and a creek.
In the summer, it will be fun to pick all the fruits, vegetables, and flowers we grow with our child. Dom loves to grow lots of varieties of tomatoes, but his favorites are the cucumbers. Mohan loves growing spicy chiles for homemade hot sauces. There are blueberry, blackberry, raspberry and rhubarb bushes and walnut, hazelnut, and pear trees.
We look forward to sledding and building snowmen with our child in the winter, and warming up by our cozy fireplace with hot chocolate. We can’t wait to spend time outdoors with our child and passing on our passion for gardening, sustainability, and nature.

ABOUT OUR DOG OOMA
You can’t get a full picture of our family without knowing our dog, Ooma. Ooma is a rescue dog from Alabama that we adopted in 2016 and immediately fell in love with. She’s an energetic beauty that is full of love and loyalty for us and our friends. She loves playing gently with our toddler goddaughters.

INTRODUCING OUR FAMILY
FAMILY IS AT THE CENTER OF WHO WE ARE.
We are lucky that our families get along well together and have melded into one big family with its own unique traditions. One of those is for both of our families to spend Memorial Day weekend with us at our upstate farmhouse. We play lawn games, prepare the garden for the summer, and cook outside by the fire. Our son or daughter is going to have a blast joining in the fun!

OUR MOMS IN SRI LANKA

FUN WITH DOM’S BROTHER AT A FAMILY REUNION
We recently became godfathers to twin girls, the daughters of two of our best friends. It’s been so amazing to watch them grow. We’ve learned a lot from their mom and dad, too, about what it’s like to be new parents.

MEETING OUR TWIN GODDAUGHTERS FOR THE FIRST TIME!
Dominic: I grew up in a small town in southern Minnesota with my older brother, mom, and dad. We lived in the country and would spend summer days outside and our winter days playing in the snow. My extended family is quite big, with dozens of aunts and uncles and lots of cousins that we often spent holidays and summers with. Every three years, we hold a giant family reunion, usually attended by at least 60-70 of us! Of course, we see my immediate family much more often. My brother lives in Oregon and often travels to Belize for work as a fishing guide. My mom still lives in my hometown in Minnesota. We spend Christmases and birthdays together, traveling to the Midwest and west coast when we’re not hosting. Our child will be my mother’s first grandchild and my brother’s first niece or nephew. Everyone is excited to welcome a new member to the family.
Mohan: I grew up in a small coastal town in Sri Lanka with my mom, dad, and older brother. I grew up with two mothers: my mom and her identical twin sister, who was always present in my life. I grew up playing cricket with my brother and cousins, riding my bike to the beach, and helping my mom in the kitchen. After my family moved to the United States in 2000, my mom was a nanny and my dad worked at a grocery store. Even though my parents did not have a lot of money, they always made sure that my brother and I had everything we needed. My parents’ sacrifices and hard work taught me the value of hard work and the value of getting a good education. My parents are now happily retired and enjoy visiting me and Dom as frequently as possible. My brother is training to become a doctor specializing in anesthesiology. My whole family remains very close and can’t wait to meet our child.

WE CAN’T WAIT TO BE PARENTS!
WE EACH HAVE AN INNATE DESIRE TO BE FATHERS AND PROVIDE FOR OUR CHILD.
We promise to raise our child to be proud of themself and confident in who they are as a person and their ability to achieve anything they want. We will give them a great education. And we look forward to teaching them empathy, to be humble and kind, to take care of others, and to be accepting of diversity. We also can’t wait to teach our kid how to eat spicy foods, solve puzzles and win at board games, have a sense of humor, love art and music, and to always be curious.
IF YOU ARE COMFORTABLE, WE WANT TO TEACH THEM ABOUT YOU, AND TELL YOU ABOUT THEM, TOO.
Thank you so much
FOR TAKING THE TIME TO GET TO KNOW US!
We would love to provide a home for your baby and are honored to be considered. If we haven’t made it clear by now, we really can’t wait to be fathers. We look forward to hearing from you.
